RECAPS 2008
Aug. 30, 2008: Maryland 14,
Delaware 7
Click here for pictures of the Maryland/Delaware gameday. As usual, excitement abounded for Opening Day against Delaware and the start of Team A-Game's 13th season of Maryland Football tailgating. And equally as customary, the University of Maryland Fun Police (aka Enemies of Freedom) were in their typically foul mood. But in a test of wills, Team A-Game prevailed. Despite being denied at all four entrances to Lot 1d, PK and Mike Norris were determined the raise the flags on another glorious season. While the Rav did not bypass a hopelessly pathetic parking gate that was sealed with caution tape and a zip tie (all while a seemingly perfect pad lock hung idly by, like the kid banished to detention while his classmates enjoyed recess), we did join other early arrivals in carrying essential equipment into the lot to secure prime tailgating spots. At 8:30 a.m., we debuted the new telescopic flag pole and raised the flags proudly over Lot 1, using a cooler of beer as the base. A-Game 1, UM Parking Communists 0. Not long after, brats were on the Q, and despite the Rav (and about a dozen other carloads of diehard fans) being blocked at the gate on Presidential Drive (I'm questioning the naming of that street given the circumstances), tailgating had begun in earnest. That wasn't the only struggle on Opening Day, as multiple tailgaters reported leaving items at home, forgetting gameday routines, etc. That included PK, who inexplicably forgot the satellite arm, leaving team members attempting to serve as live antenas. Step-up move of the day goes to Kristine, who swung by PK's place to pick up the arm. The was soon followed by the dish of the day, Brian Robinson's apple slaw bacon cheeseburgers. FAntAstic. B-Rob also brought the ladder golf. Mother Nature didn't help, providing hazy, hot and humid conditions that sapped some of the life out of the 49,119 fans at Byrd Stadium. The Turtles' mediocre play probably had something to do with it, as they let an overmatched opponent hang around too long in a closer-than-need-be 14-7 victory. Still, a win is a win and it's great to be 1-0 after one game. After a game at Middle Tennessee State, the Lefties from California come to Byrd for Team A-Game's next gameday on Sept. 13. P.S. -- I'm already sick of writing these recaps.
Hopefully someone else in the group will step up next time. Sept. 13, 2008: Maryland 35, Cal 27
