Always one of the most anticipated games each year, longtime Maryland football rivals Salisbury
and Frostburg State meet on the last Saturday of the regular season for
the Regents Cup, a trophy created in 1999 by both schools' coaches and
the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. The winner gets to
display the Cup on campus for a year and also claims the title
“Champion of the Free State,” which is engraved on the Cup.
Located at opposite ends of the state, the teams turn the Baltimore
area into a battleground for the Cup each November. There's some very
good tailgating, and the event is almost like another homecoming game.
The teams have met every year since 1973, Salisbury's first
full varsity season. The series has been characterized by streaks, as
the Sea Gulls have put together six- and seven-game winning streaks,
while the Bobcats have runs of four and six games. The teams have split
their last six games. Salisbury leads the Regents Cup series 5-4 and
the all-time series 19-16. The 2001 edition was the only overtime game
in the series.
Salisbury to Meet Frostburg in Regents Cup X at Navy on Nov. 15
Salisbury will take on Frostburg State in the 10th annual
Regents Cup Game Saturday, Nov. 15 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial
Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and general
admission tickets priced at $10 will be on sale at the stadium gates.
Salisbury is the visiting team and Sea Gull fans should sit opposite
the press box in sections 25-32. Salisbury tailgaters should park in
the Gold Lot (first entrance) off of Faragut Road. Parking is $5 per
car and lots open at 4 p.m.
