Always one of the most anticipated games each year, longtime Maryland football rivals Salisbury and Frostburg State meet on the last Saturday of the regular season for the Regents Cup, a trophy created in 1999 by both schools' coaches and the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. The winner gets to display the Cup on campus for a year and also claims the title “Champion of the Free State,” which is engraved on the Cup. Located at opposite ends of the state, the teams turned the Baltimore area into a battleground for the Cup each November from 1999-2008. There was some very good tailgating, and the event resembled another homecoming game for each school.
For better or worse, the Regents Cup Game has moved back to campus. For some reason, it always seems to conflict with a Maryland home game, so Team A-Game's attendance has been limited in recent years. Go Gulls!
The teams have met every year since 1973, Salisbury's first full varsity season. The series has been characterized by streaks, as the Sea Gulls have put together six- and seven-game winning streaks, while the Bobcats have runs of four and six games. Salisbury has won the last five and leads the Regents Cup series 6-4 and the all-time series 20-16. The 2001 edition was the only overtime game in the series.
Salisbury to Host Frostburg in Regents Cup XI on Nov. 14
Salisbury will take on Frostburg State in the 11th annual Regents Cup Game Saturday, Nov. 14 at Sea Gull Stadium in Salisbury, Md. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. This will mark the first time since 1998 that the teams have met on campus.
