MARYLAND AT BOSTON COLLEGE

Bring Your Maryland State Flags!

Page updated 7/25/08

Game Info
Maryland at Boston College
Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008
Kickoff Time and TV Network TBA
Alumni Stadium (44,500)
Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Series: BC leads, 3-2

Tickets ($45 each)
Order your tickets through the Maryland ticket office by calling (800) IMA-TERP. The priority deadline for ordering tickets through UM is Nov. 7. Probably two or three weeks before kickoff, UM will return unsold tickets to Boston College. If Maryland has returned unsold tickets, try calling the BC ticket office at (617) 552-4622 and requesting seats in the visitor sections. In 2006, a strong contingent of 3,000 Red Shirts bought tickets through UM and traveled to Boston for a great weekend.

Transportation in Boston
Boston has a pretty comprehensive public transportation system (MBTA, commonly called “The T”). If you are flying to Boston, you may not need to rent a car. Visit www.mbta.com. Alumni Stadium is a short walk from various stops along the T's Green Line, depending on which train you take. Here's a table taken from the BC Web site:

Green Line Name of Stop/Station Walk to Alumni Stadium
Train B * Boston College 4 minutes
Train C Cleveland Circle 15 minutes
Train D Chestnut Hill 8 minutes
Train D Reservoir 15 minutes
* Best train to use in 2006 if you're heading to the Maryland Tailgate at Roggie's Brew and Grille. Get off at the Train B's Chestnut Hill Avenue Stop to get to Roggie's.

Recommended Eats and Drinks in Boston
A friend of Team A-Game and former beer industry/restaurant GM has provided some recommendations for some Boston eateries and pubs. Tommy Doyle's (two locations) is a classic Boston Irish tavern. Boston Beer Works is a brew pub near Fenway Park (also has other locations) with a tasty menu item called Shark Sticks. If you're somehow in the mood for burgers in Boston, try Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage, a landmark in Cambridge since 1960. Pizzeria Regina is a good spot for pizza in the North End. Grill 23 and Bar is one of Boston's better steakhouses, located in Back Bay. Some good beer bars include: Anam Cara Pub and Restaurant in Brookline, which has a great draft selection, superior bottle selection, clean lines and serves beer in the proper glassware, Bukowski's Tavern in Back Bay, which has a great selection but is a louder and perhaps pricey, and Sunset Grill and Tap in Allston, which has an enormous draft (112-plus) and bottle selection, a non-smoking section, fiery hot wings and a good all-around menue.

2006 Tailgate
Feedback from locals in Boston indicates that gameday parking near Alumni Stadium is very limited, and tailgating rules are strict, to say the least. We have confirmed a bar that will serve as the pregame destination for Maryland fans. Roggie's Brew and Grille has 52 beers on tap and is about a 10-minute walk to Alumni Stadium. It's also conveniently located one block away from the Chestnut Hill Avenue Stop on the T's Green Line B Train. The Maryland Indoor Tailgate will be in the Cavo Lounge of Roggie's. The bar will open at 9 a.m. for us on Saturday.

Raising of the Flags
TBA

Map of 2006 Tailgate Location at Roggie's Brew and Grille
Click here for a google.com map that shows the location of Roggie's and accompanying short walk around Chestnut Hill Reservoir to Alumni Stadium. Roggie's address is 356 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton, MA 02135. The address of the Green Line B Train's Chestnut Hill Avenue Stop is just down the street at 304 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton, MA 02135.

Previous Trips to BC
Team A-Game made our first trip to Boston for the 2006 Maryland/BC game. What a great city. The public transportation system is excellent. You really do not need a car. We toured the Samuel Adams brewery, did the Freedom Walk and of course enjoyed a pub crawl in the North End area. UM sold 3,000 tickets for the game, and it showed on the streets and in the bars of Boston throughout the weekend. The Courtyard Tremont Hotel, below, is centrally near stops for the Green and Orange T lines. I'm sure other hotels are located near T stops, but that's in a good part of town with close access to other fun/historic places.

Slightly higher prices for everything not withstanding, it's a must weekend getaway every two years. The downside is the college's communist-like laws regarding tailgating. As such, the Terrapin Nation gathered at a bar near Alumni Stadium for an indoor pregame tailgate. The same type of event will be planned for the 2008 game.

Our good friends, the D7 Tailgate group, attended the Clemson at BC game Sept. 9, 2006. Click here for a very informative and entertaining recap of that experience.

Bring the Flag

About 150-175 Red Shirts filed into Roggie's Brew and Grille for an indoor pregame tailgate prior to the Maryland-BC game in 2006. The Terrapin Nation traveled 3,000 strong to Boston that year.
