Recommended Restaurants/Bars in Chapel Hill
A North Carolina alum and friend of Team A-Game has provided some recommendations for social and dining options in Chapel Hill. On the top of his list is the bar He's Not Here on Franklin Street: “No frills, just cheap beer and a long tradition. But every Tar Heel worth his/her salt calls this place home. One of the last true Chapel Hill bars that's been there for 35 or 40 years.” For dining and local beers, try Top of the Hill Restaurant at the corner of Franklin and Columbia streets. Click here for the official site and here for a review. Another dining/brewery option is the Carolina Brewery, also on Franklin Street. Click here for the official site and here for a review.

Mike H., a 2005 UM grad and frequent visitor to Chapel Hill, also has offered some thoughts:

Breakfast: Mama Dip's Kitchen, 408 W. Rosemary St. “Hands down one of the best southern breakfasts you'll ever eat. Get the sweet potato pancakes or any of the omlettes with Hoop Wheel cheese and you won't be disappointed.”

Local Secret: “He's Not Here is fantastic, but the best-kept secret at Chapel Hill is Deep End Bar. Every weekend night they have 25 cent beers in the basement. In fact, the students call it the '25-cent beer bar.' How can you go wrong with that? For a $5 cover you're pretty much drinking free the rest of the night. The trick is though that the deal is only in the basement. The middle floor and the top floor doesn't have the same deal.”

Another Option: The Carolina Coffee Shop, 138 E. Franklin St. Click here for a review. “Doesn't sound like a bar, but has great specials and a lot of tradition.”

Dining/Beer: Milltown, 307 E. Main St., Carrboro, NC 27510 (phone 919-968-2460). Click here for a review. “Fantastic beer selection and food. Our favorite place to get dinner. It's set up like a German beer house and has hundreds of beer on tap or by the bottle. The burgers and sandwiches are great and so are the clams. Its a little bit farther down Franklin Street, but it's definitely worth the walk.”

Wine/Low-Key: West End Wine Bar, 450 W. Franklin St. “This is for the classier or older crowd. It's considered the grad-school bar by students. Great wine selection and a good place to either start the night or just sit and talk to friends.”

No Tickets? Ham's. “Good place to watch the game if you can't get tickets.”

Warning on Top of the Hill (above): “We were asked to leave after the Terps took down their beloved Tar Heels in basketball last season for cheering too loud. So we refuse to go there anymore. But the food is pretty good.”

And, some of the folks at scout.com's North Carolina Internet message board have provided additional suggestions:

Breakfast: Crook's Corner. “It's down a bit on West Franklin and probably better for a Sunday brunch than a gameday stop, but they have very good food and the shrimp and grits is not to be missed (and neither is your cholesterol medicine if you order it!). If you are going to do the Sunday brunch, call ahead for reservations.”

Breakfast: Sutton's. “An old-fashioned drug store/counter diner right on Franklin Street. Very informal and GREAT place for an early breakfast before you get your tailgating started.”

Breakfast: Breadman's. On Rosemary Sreet behind Franklin Street. “An IHop-type menu. Lots of pancakes, waffles, etc. Good stuff.”

Breakfast: Ye Olde Waffle House. “The name says what this place is about...on Franklin next to Sutton's.”

Dinner: Angus Barn. “OK, my favorite in the Triangle and this one is different and probably better for you on Friday night. It's by the airport and unique. Good steaks and great atmosphere.”

Dinner: Spanky's and Top of the Hill. “Both places have good food and drink and a good Franklin Street location.”

Italian: 411 West. “Across from Ham's. A bit more upscale, Italian, very good.”

Directions to Tailgate Lot
To the general Chapel Hill area from the Balto./D.C. area, follow I-95 southbound through Richmond, Va. Do NOT take the I-295 bypass around Richmond. Stay on I-95 through Richmond, and south of that town pick up I-85 southbound towards Atlanta. (At your discretion when you cross the North Carolina state line, stop your car, get out, drape a Maryland flag over the Welcome to North Carolina sign, and take a picture.) As you get into Durham, N.C., exit left at U.S. Route 15/501 in Durham and follow Route 15/501 South approximately 9 miles to Chapel Hill.

The Manning Lot on the UNC campus will be the home for the A-Game Tailgate and the Terrapin Nation, and to get to this lot you should stay on Route 15/501 South once in Chapel Hill. From Route 15/501 South, turn right onto Manning Drive. Take Manning Drive to a left turn onto Skipper Bowles Drive, then a quick left into the lot.

The Manning Lot (in the lower right corner of the map, shaded red, three rows) will be the home of the A-Game Tailgate and the Terrapin Nation. General Notes about the Manning Lot and Tailgating at UNC
Click here for info about 2007 football parking, per the UNC Department of Public Safety. Campus parking is very limited.
UNC says open flames are prohibited, as is alcohol. Be sure to have red plastic cups for your adult beverages. Bring trash bags to police your own area.
Parking in the Manning Lot is $8 per car and exact change is helpful to speed the traffic flow.
The Manning Lot has 500 spaces. Arrive early and establish the home lot advantage for the Turtles.
There is some construction on and around Manning Drive.
Port-o-pots are available in the Manning Lot.

Previous Trips to Chapel Hill
Some friends (Mike C., David K., Doug R. and Orlando Z.) and I made the short weekend trek down to Chapel Hill, N.C., in November 2005 to watch the Terps take on North Carolina. We arrived at the team hotel on Friday night and were immediately greeted by a large contingent of Terp fans at the hotel bar. Partying with fellow Maryland fans at the team hotel on the night before a game always turns into a memorable event!

Gameday tailgating at UNC is a great time because the pay parking lots are always filled with Maryland red. Despite Maryland’s sub-par record in 2005, Terp fans did not disappoint — they were in full force both in the tailgating lots and inside Kenan Stadium. We participated in some good-natured trash talking with the fans in baby blue on the walk to the Stadium. Most UNC fans we encountered were very respectful — all that they asked from us was to beat Duke in basketball.

The game was a nailbiter. The Terps secured the 33-30 W in overtime after trailing by 10 points with nine minutes to play. Both Vernon Davis and Lance Ball had monster games that ignited the Terps on the field and the Terps in the stands.

Post-game in Chapel Hill is always full of surprises — whether you’re bar hopping on Franklin Street or taking advantage of a photo op with Debbie Yow, the Maryland Athletic Director. This road trip to North Carolina is a must for all Maryland football fans! —Noli
