Gameday morning update 10/10/09

Gameday Morning Note: We will likely be in the public lot on the west side of Joel Coliseum (lot abuts Deacon Blvd and University Pkwy). At some point this morning, the entrance to this lot off Deacon Blvd. will become exit only due in part to the fair. Circle the block and enter this lot from University Parkway.

General Directions to Winston-Salem
From the Balto/D.C. corridor, take I-95 South through Richmond and exit onto I-85 South towards Durham, N.C., and Atlanta. Continue on I-85 South into North Carolina, and feel free to make obscene gestures to the welcome signs as you cross state lines (provided your passengers are of appropriate age). Stay on I-85 South and then merge onto I-40 West/I-85 South towards Greensboro and Winston-Salem. This road will eventually split. Be sure to stay on I-40 West, then follow signs for Winston-Salem, N.C.

Map of Tailgate Lot
Click here for a google.com map of Deacon Blvd. and University Pkwy. in Winston-Salem. To the east of this intersection is Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and several adjacent parking lots with entrances off Deacon Blvd. The Terrapin Nation is welcome in these lots. Click here for Wake Forest's official football parking map, which shows the same area. The Terrapin Nation will be in one of the gold-shaded public parking lots off of Deacon Blvd. Look for the flags as you approach the area. The lots are public gameday parking for $8 per space. Multiple spaces may be purchased if desired. Click here for a link to info about tailgating policies at Wake.

Address of Tailgate Lot for GPS and Mapquest

Dixie Classic Fair in Winston-Salem this Weekend
This fair is happening this weekend in town, and patrons may be using the Joel Coliseum parking lots. This may or may not affect your parking plans pending time of arrival. Some entrances to the Coliseum may be enter-only or exit-only.

Raising of the Flags
9 a.m. The Wake Forest General Public Parking Web page indicates the public lots of the coliseum will open "the morning of the game."

Group Picture
All Terp fans are welcome to gather for a group picture, probably near the A-Game Tailgate, around 4:30 or 5 p.m.

Previous Trips to Wake Forest
Team A-Game traveled to Wake in 2001. We parked for free in the Lawrence Joel Coliseum lot, right across Deacon Blvd. from Groves Stadium. Not too many tailgaters there, and no comments from Deacon fans, so the atmosphere was rather bland. The stadium was maybe a little over half-filled for the game, which the Turtles won, 27-20. Winston-Salem has its highlights and lowlights. The biggest dagger may be that it is a good hour or so west of the general Dook-UNC-N.C. State area, but it is still well within driving distance from College Park. With the Deacons now consistently competitive under coach Jim Grobe and with a stadium renovation project now complete, expect a much more energized atmosphere. —PK
